How to make your ceilings look taller

General interior design wisdom says to raise your curtains as high as possible to draw the eye up. Although the principle is good, I want to argue that this tends to look dumb, like so:

Stupid! So high up, it just looks like somebody didn't know what they were doing when they hung them.

The good way to do it is like this:

Good job, Danielle Oakey Interiors. By hanging the curtains high but disguising the extra space with a pelmet, you take advantage of all the window space but you don't see the awkward space above the window which gives away the fact that your windows aren't that tall.

Plus, pelmets are just cool. And they make a room look finished. The end.
