Etsy does my boyfriend's bedroom

Ever see images in magazines that look like they were all shopped from the same source?
Restoration Hardware produces some stereotypical shots like this. They look impersonal and flat, because there's no life to them and no sense of history. Well, I challenged myself to shop just from Etsy (I know, it's not exactly the same concept, but whatever) and came up with the following moodboard for a room I'd be happy to share with my significant other.

The Big Pieces:
I'd add metal legs to the trunk like the inspiration image on the bottom right, making the pie safe and trunk the same heights. Then I added an industrial bookcase for, duh, books (I don't trust people who don't own books) and the little rustic console table as a desk/vanity. Probably with a Louis ghost chair, which I forgot to look up on Etsy.

The Textiles/Bedding:
I'm actually obsessed with that suzani pillow that kicked off the entire color scheme. Oh, and I cheated a tiny bit...bedspread and sheets are from West Elm. Bedding was surprisingly sparse on Etsy? I'd get the textured duvet pictured here, but in the grey shown. Find items here:

The Pretties:
The prints are from my #1 most favorite artist on Etsy, TastesOrangey, Claire Elsaesser. I actually bought this print for my boyfriend:
...so of course I had to use it in my dream joint bedroom. She sent it in the cutest package with a sweet little note too...I suggest you check her out. Sources:
Cream Globe Brass Bookends Black Room Print Dreamy Print November Print Books Letterpress LOVE Vintage Chandelier Brass Obelisk Geometric Candlestick Holders Vintage Hanging Lamps

So what might this look like all together? I'm glad you asked!

I'd use the vintage globe light as reading pendants, hang a pretty chandelier in the middle of the room to balance out all the manliness, and bring in touches of me with pretty little nicknacks. I like the mix of rugged/rustic and pretty, girly touches. I tend to be more tomboy than girly-girl, so I could see myself being very happy in this room :)

The point is, nowadays it's very possible to create a room with a lot of character and history, even if you shop from one source. Just be creative and don't settle for builder-box decor.

What do you think of my first attempt at a ghetto-rigged mood board?? Should I convince my boyfriend to take some of these steps, or do you think this design is all wrong?

Anna's place

My bff is moving out of her current apartment into a place of her own....time to get my decorator on!! Here are a few images that make me think of her....not necessarily things she would pick on her own I don't think, but ones that remind me of her style. She's really into neutrals (we joke about how her bridesmaids dresses will all be champagne and gold) and simple, classy silhouettes. Basically all the same words I would use to describe this photo:

I like this one for its simple color palate but lots of visual interest:

Ann you know how you have those orange accents now? Add a little blue and voila!

I think that interesting fabrics on classic silhouettes are the way to go for her. This room is simple but has a lot of visual interest, just like the one I summarized above (even though they look nothing alike!)

I could see this being her bedroom.

And I think a nice airy living room would be a great way to unwind after a long day at grad school. This room is great because all you have to do is swap out the pillow for a whole new color scheme!

Anna recently bought a plain wood cabinet on Craigslist (I got her hooked :) and wants to dress it up a little. I think an option like this is beautiful:

Similar color scheme and idea, Danika from Gorgeous Shiny Things is selling these soon and I think they're awesome. Anna, this is what I was talking about when I said glue balsa wood (or whatever) onto the front and paint it cool. You could also paint it all one color for a less dramatic look (and since I'm lazy, if I were doing it myself I'd do something much simpler haha)

You could also ask for a wallpaper sample at your local store, glue it on, and put pretty knobs over that!

If you don't like the idea of gluing wood/wallpaper on in case you ever want to change it, I really want to try a project like this! Paint a base coat, then use a white/silver/gold/whatever light colored Sharpie in the pattern you choose!

The pattern on the headboard would work well on the corners of your doors....just some ideas! :)

New Studio Ideas

So I know this is a really rough look....but I was playing around with my different furniture options and I realized I have more options than I initially thought. Lesson learned today: Don't be static in how you use your furniture. A bedside table can become an end table, a vanity can be used next to the bed, etc.New Studio Ideas

In this version, I'd only have to buy a new rug....as you know, I've been going back and forth on what I'd like. One of the hard things is that sometime in the distant future my significant other and I will live together, so while I really like, for example, a girly glam gold zebra rug I know he'd be less than pleased. When I'm a student with an ridiculously limited budget, is it smart to get what I want now and love it while I have it, or since I'm on limited funds and will be for a while, does it make more sense to get something that has a longer shelf life--say, something a little more dude friendly?

What's your take on this dilemma?

Polyvore mashup

What I've got to work with

Can anyone tell me how the hell to get photos to come through clear and not stupid like the dining chairs and coffee table? The shot of my bed was completely useless (thus the stand-in), I'm perplexed!

Dining room rough draft

So here's what I'd like to see in my dining room: I have basically that table, but it has four legs. I own almost the same chair as the yellow one but mine's blue. I'm dyyyyyyinnnnnng for some dowel Eames chairs but can't afford them....even the knockoff Kmart ones are too spendy :( In my dream world I'd also add a pretty buffet for more storage, and I like the mirrored fronts to make the space seem bigger and to pick up the slightly ethnic/Moroccan vibe of pieces in the living room/bedroom areas. I'm thinking I'd get two lamps with same color bases to spread light around the small space, and put one of my painting above the buffet. Your thoughts?

Bedroom start-off point

I'm on a roll! Here's a rough sketch of my bedroom. The duvet is from Crate and Barrel and is all green, not patterns. Lamps are lucite. Dressing table is dusky purple, as are the cushion on the bench and the sheets. Bench is dark wood that matches the wood side table on the left. I'd do the frame of the mirrors over the dresser in dark wood too. Not sure what color I'd do the dresser but I like the detailing. Bedroom start-off point

I own things that look like: dressing table, bench, left side table, duvet, lamp. To complete this look I'd have to pick up the mirrors, dresser, and another bedside table, if the space called for it. I know you're all fascinated with this peek into my life (kiddddding....) but I started this blog as a place to store all my interiors ideas so you're gonna have to just tough it out :)

living room rough draft

First time on Polyvore! Here's a rough draft of what I'd like my home to look like one day...imagine the cane-back chair in dark brown with a dusky purple cushion, and the coffee table is dark brown wood, not black.Living Room Idea
It's a really rough draft, obviously--I'm still learning!! But you get the idea...I want it to be eclectic but still put-together, with a boho-glam vibe.

Things I already own: acrylic lamp, cane-back chair, coffee table, map art.
Things I'd have to buy: rug, pouf, rocking chair (yeah, right), couch. I have pillows too but obviously they aren't as fabulous as these Trina Turk ones :)

What do you think? Good first step? I really like the mixed metals idea... brass pharmacy lamp, gold leaf on the side table (easy DIY?), and silver pouf. Ya dig?
